Seniors Live Longer and Look Younger
By Sandy Riordan, Owner, Golden Age Fitness
Everyone knows exercise is important. It is especially important for seniors.
The problem is finding the right exercise and sticking to a regimen especially
as you age. For older adults, the question remains, which is better, cardio
exercise or strength training? The answer is both.
Strength training
combined with cardiovascular exercise can actually slow down aging. If you
exercise moderately, it is possible for you to add 1 1/2 years to your life. If
you exercise vigorously, you may be able to add about three years to your life.
Strength training can take the form of water aerobics, working with bands,
or even repeatedly lifting a can of beans or bottles of water. You only need to
do strength training twice a week, then incorporate aerobic exercise such as
walking, bike riding or swimming three times a week. Try starting out slowly,
taking a walk to the corner and back. Each day add a little more. Why not try
breaking it up a walk one day, a bike ride the second day, and swimming the
next. End your workout with a good stretching routine. It is just as important
and shouldn't be forgotten.
Most people have good intentions when it comes
to exercise, but don't get around to it or make excuses why not to do it. It
takes a lot of discipline doing the right thing, even when you don't feel like
it. Just keep in mind that what you do today will determine how you age
tomorrow. All in all, find an activity that you look forward to and that matches
your personality. As the saying goes, "Use It or Lose It."
